Comparing A-A-5301 and Mil-W-17337 Mil-spec Webbing

When it comes to military webbing used in the production of tactical nylon goods, there are two popular specifications: A-A-55301 and MIL-W-17337. Both types of webbing are widely utilized in various military applications. They are so similar - we get asked a lot what their differences are. Let’s dive into the details and compare these two types of nylon webbing.

A-A-55301 Nylon Webbing (1” width):

  • Thickness: Approximately 0.046 inches
  • Weight: Minimum of 0.50 oz./lin. yd.
  • Breaking Strength: Minimum of 1000 pounds
  • Flexibility: Tough and rigid with some flexibility
  • Common Uses: Often used for shoulder straps, MOLLE systems, and many other military and commercial applications that require high break strength and rigidity.

Mil-W-17337 Nylon Webbing (1” width):

  • Thickness: Approximately 0.044 inches.
  • Weight: Minimum of 0.71 oz./lin. yd.
  • Breaking Strength: Minimum of 1000 pounds
  • Flexibility: Like A-A-55301 but generally considered slightly less rigid
  • Common Uses: Used in military backpacks, heavy-duty outdoor gear, and other applications requiring durability and flexibility.

Material and Durability

Both A-A-55301 and Mil-W-17337 webbing are woven from high-quality nylon, renowned for its durability and resistance to wear and tear. A-A-55301 is typically chosen for applications needing rigidity, such as heavy-duty outdoor gear and MOLLE systems. Conversely, Mil-W-17337 is preferred for projects where a thinner profile is advantageous, making it easier to handle.

Should I use A-A-55301 or Mil-W-17337 in my finished product?

Choosing between A-A-55301 and Mil-W-17337 depends on the specific requirements of your finished product. Opt for A-A-55301 if you need rigidity and strength. Choose Mil-W-17337 if you need a slightly thinner profile and flexibility, which can be easier to work with for various heavy-duty applications.

The main difference between them is in their weaving pattern and design, which affect their specific properties and suitability for various applications.

If you’re unsure, requesting samples to test in your specific application can help you make the best decision.

MMI offers both Mil-W-17337 and A-A-55301 webbing in a range of widths and solid military colors, as well as in MultiCam, M81 Woodland, and OCP patterns. Please note our webbing is the commercial variant of these mil-specs due to the use of solution-dyed yarn.
